The Aten-disk was venerated as a form of god from
the late Middle Kingdom during the reign of Akhenaten, the Aten was made the
king god.
Akhenaten considered Aten as the only god, and
creator of the universe, beginning with Akhenaten father, Amenhotep III, Aten
enjoyed a higher level of worship.
The Aten was represented in the new artwork of this
time, known as the Amarna Period, as a disk with lines representing rays of
light terminating in hands which reach out to the royal family, sometimes
offering an Ankh, the hieroglyphic sign for life. Akhenaten, his wife Nefertiti
and his daughters are frequently shown worshipping the Aten or indulging in
everyday activities beneath the Aten disk.
